Over the summer, AdBiblio helped promote international best-selling author Michelle Gable’s book tour. Gable hit six separate bookstores to talk about and sign her newest book, A Paris Apartment. The bestselling novel is inspired by the fascinating real life discovery of a Parisian apartment shuttered for 70 years. We were so excited to hear that the events were all a success, with a whopping 115 people showing up for the last one in Pawley’s Island, SC!
Running event ads always makes us warm and fuzzy inside, because we know we’re helping multiple players in the book industry: the publicist spread the event with locals, the bookstore draw a crowd, and, most importantly, authors connect with their biggest fans while new ones are born! Win-win-win-win!
So, in honor of our love for book events everywhere, we’re sharing ten bookstores across the country and the fantastic job they do of bringing the literary community together.
Starting off, our #10 spot hits very close to home…
#10 FLYLEAF BOOKS
Chapel Hill, NC
Nestled in Chapel Hill and a hop, skip and a jump from our AdBiblio office, we’ve seen several fantastic authors take the stage at Flyleaf Bookstore. This month Flyleaf joins other bookstores in the Triangle for Triangle Goes BOGO: a lunch event where 12 authors visit your dining table one at a time to talk about their book, their writing and all things literary.

Los Angeles, California
The Last Bookstore is California’s largest used and new book and record store. With events nearly every day, this September brings best-selling authors Patrick Rothfuss and Austin Kleon.
La Jolla, CA
The first stop on Michelle Gable’s tour, Warwicks is the country’s oldest family-owned and operated bookstore! With strong ties to the community, the store holds a “Weekend with Locals” event each weekend to bring local authors together with readers.
#7 WILD RUMPUS
I can still remember how magical it was to hear readings at my local bookstore as a child, and WILD RUMPUS in Minneapolis keeps the enchanment alive for visiting young readers. Named after the classic Maurice Sendak book, Where The Wild Things Are, holds continuous events like Tail Time, a weekly storytime for pre-schoolers. Did we mention they also have animals in the store, including a tarantula named Thomas Jefferson?
#6 THE STRAND
David Foster Wallace, David Sedaris and Zadie Smith are just a few of the celebrated authors that have appeared on the STRAND stage in New York City. This month, the store held the first ever live recording of Book Riot’s interview podcast.
#5 SQUARE BOOKS
Known as the home to great writers such as William Faulkner, Barry Hannah and Larry Brown, SQUARE BOOKS is the perfect historical landmark to bring literary lovers together. The store hosts the popular Thacker Mountain radio show and over 150 author events a year!
#4 PRARIE LIGHTS
Iowa City, Iowa
Half of the Prarie Lights bookstore is a coffee house located in the same space that local literary society met throughout the 1930s, hosting writers Carl Sandburg, Robert Friday, Langston Hughes and others. The strength of its reputation continues with “Live from Prarie Lights”, an internationally known live reading series which features some of the best up-and-coming authors & poets from all over the globe.
#3 POLITICS AND PROSE
A significant part of D.C. culture, Politics and Prose is famous for its author events which have included politicians such as Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, and author J.K. Rowling. With multiple events every day, there’s always a chance to mingle with one if your favorite best-selling authors.
#2 CITY LIGHTS
San Francisco, CA
Officially a historic landmark, City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco has been a booming literary meeting place since 1952. In addition to being a bookstore, City Lights publishes cutting-edge books, and many of the weekend events include their own authors.
#1 POWELLS CITY OF BOOKS
Powell’s is a chain of bookstores in Portland, Oregon and claims to be the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world! From weekly kids story time, monthly book clubs and daily readings from authors like Jonathan Franzen and Gregory Maguire, there’s an event for every booklover!
